"Where were you when the world stopped turning, that September day?"

I can remember it like it was yesterday.  I was a freshman in high school.  I had weight lifting 1st period where there was no access to the TV. (Before you bust out laughing that I took weight lifting, it was an option to take instead of regular "PE" if you played a sport.  My sport was cheerleading- yes it's a sport.  I opted to be the weight lifting coach's assistant, therefore maybe dressed out and actually worked out one time.  I took weight lifting every year after that.)  Anyway, I walked into the common area after weight lifting like I did every day.  Although today it was different.  People were crying; there was a lot of quiet chatter.  Finally a friend approached and asked if I heard what happened.  I was clueless.  Then, they told me the dreaded news, a plane had hit one of the twin towers.

Although, at this point we did not know that it was a terrorist attack.  There was a lot of speculation about what could possibly be happening.  Maybe a plane malfunctioned?  Maybe it WAS a terrorist attack?  I went on to 2nd period which was Spanish.  At this point every classroom had the TV turned on to the news.  We were not doing any work, but instead just glued to the television waiting to see if any more information would come through telling us what happened.  Not too long after, we saw the second plane heading straight towards the second building.  Seconds later, the building was up in smoke.  At that moment I knew, we were under attack.  We just sat there in silence.  How could this be happening?  How could someone be so cruel enough to want to kill innocent people simply because we are American.  The rest of the day was the same.  We watched the towers fall.  We watched people running frantic in the streets covered in soot.  Some students' parents came to pick them up.  I think it was just that everyone wanted to hold their family tight, count our blessings that we are still here.

I did not know anyone personally who was killed in the tragedy, but I still felt so personally connected to those people.  I was only 15 and for the first time I felt fear just BEING in my country.  I still get nervous every time I travel on an airplane.  I can't help but think about what happened, and how terrified those passengers must of been.  We can't forget about the brave passengers on one of the other planes that took matters into their own hands and crashed the plane that was supposed to be headed to the White House.

I can't say enough how thankful I am for our Military that fights for our freedom everyday.  Also, the policemen and firefighters in NY on that day are braver than I could ever hope to be.  I am proud to be an American.  This day especially I just want to say THANK YOU to all of those service men and women that have given their lives to protect ME and my country.

I really can't believe it has been 11 years since this horrible attack.  Last year on this day I was laying in a hospital bed watching the news coverage trying to keep Brady cooking a little longer.  What were you doing 11 years ago when the towers were attacked?  It is certainly a day in my life that I will never forget.

I need to get it together

I am known for being fashionably late.  I try with all my might to get to work on time, but probably 3 out of 5 days a week, I'm late.  I couldn't get anywhere on time when I only had to myself to worry about getting ready, let alone a baby.  So, we are late, a lot.

This new taking Brady to pre-school thing has really thrown me off my schedule.  It was so much easier when it didn't matter if he was dressed or not, because the baby sitter was coming to our house.  I will also admit that I am NOT a morning person.  To tell you the truth, I am neither a morning person or a night owl.  I guess I just like my sleep- ha!  Paul is the same way.  Neither of us jump out of bed at the first sounds of Brady stirring in the morning.  I just want to soak up 5 MORE MINUTES, and after those go by, I want just 5 MORE MINUTES.  But, what do those 5 minutes do for me?  Nothing, but make me more tired.  I am making a vow to just GET up when my alarm goes off (my bedside one or more often the one in the other room).

I should try to be more organized the night before so on work/school day mornings we aren't running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

Why not make lunch the night before? Put clothes out?  The fact of the matter is, I am a function on high speed in the morning kind of person.  While it would be nice to sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee and breakfast in the morning, it will probably never happen, or rarely.  I take my coffee and breakfast on the go most everyday.

It is perfect now as Brady doesn't have to be in his classroom at any set time, but I better start preparing for when he starts elementary school.  Doesn't school start at like 7:30am??  I'm going to be in trouble!

Ready to go!

Brady's lunch!

Dreaming of a new home: bathroom addition

When Paul and I got married almost 3 years ago, I moved into his bachelor pad.  And, our house is pretty much still a bachelor pad (minus the nursery).  I don't think bachelor pads come with a nursery.  The nursery is actually my favorite room in the house.  It is the only room that I have decorated from scratch, and the only room that has furniture I picked out.  Don't get me wrong I do love our little house, and I love our location.  That is the reason we have had such a hard time finding a new house.  I don't want to give up our in town location, but it is hard to find a newer/larger home in town that doesn't cost a fortune.

I love looking at design inspiration for one day when we do find a new home.  Paul immediately starts telling me that I need to stop looking at all these pictures, because we are not spending the kind of money.  A girl can dream right?  I try to explain to him that these are just ideas that I LIKE.  You can always makes things work on a budget.

I wanted to share some of the inspiration for our master bathroom that I have found.  The biggest thing that our home is lacking now is storage space!  So, that is one thing that I will make sure I have PLENTY of in our next home.  While I was researching I made sure to look for pieces with plenty of drawers, cabinets, etc.  Here are just a few ideas that I love:

I really like the dark wood with the marble white counter.  (I know Paul, we won't be getting marble countertops.) I also love the gray walls, the storage space, and the cute monogrammed hand towel.

I really like a stand alone tub.  It kind of has an antique feel to it.  I also like the gray walls and the "his" and "her" sink areas.

Although I wouldn't do wood floors in a bathroom I like the contrast of the dark floor to the white cabinets.  Again I like the stand alone tub, and I love the idea of having a separate vanity area to do my hair and make up.

I love the idea of a big walk in glass shower.  I love taking a bath, but the reality is I use the shower way more often.  I want to have a large shower where it is easy to shave my legs...not too much to ask right?

Ok, yeah this one is just in my dreams, but how gorgeous is that?!

What do y'all think?  Do you like the contrast of the dark wood with the white countertop, or do you prefer a more "spa like" bathroom in all white/ light colors?

And so it begins

...the daycare "ick".  Brady felt pretty warm on Wednesday night, so I decided we needed to take his temperature.  He had been a little congested, but other than that acted totally normal.  His temperature was 102.6!  Poor baby was burning up.  We called the doctor, and they instructed us to give him some Motrin and bring him in the next day.

Daddy worried about his baby boy.

We took him to the doctor the next day, and they diagnosed him with ANOTHER bacterial infection.  I really hated for him to have to get on another antibiotic, but he needed it to get better.  The doctor said it could have been the same infection from a couple weeks ago that just never fully cleared up.  I just feel so bad for our poor baby boy.  Despite being sick, he was still acting his usual happy self.  He did NOT like when the doctor was looking in his ears, and he didn't like having to get his toe pricked either.  But, he is such a little trooper.  I just hope his immune system builds up quickly and we can get passed these sick days!

Waiting in the lab area for a throat swab and toe prick.

Blog Makeover

I have never been the most tech savvy of people.  I actually dropped computer science in college and opted to take statistics instead, because after the first lab I was so overwhelmed I didn't think I could handle it.  Now I am kicking myself, because I wish I did have a little more knowledge of HTML, Web design, etc.

I love reading other people's blogs, and I love when one's design is really eye catching.  I have tried to update the design of my blog on my own, but it never really turns out how I want it.

I did some googling and came across this website, 17th Avenue Designs.  I loved her designs and decided to purchase one of her pre-made templates.  She created the header for me and then gave me simple instructions on how to install the template. I think it turned out so cute!

How do you like the new look?

Let me just clarify

This is Riley:

This is Brady:

I think I have caused some confusion with the name of my blog.  You see I started this blog before Brady was even a thought in our minds.  "The Life of Riley" was my chosen blog title, because it kind of serves two purposes:

1. Our life through the dog (if that makes any sense...not even sure if it makes sense to me- ha!)

and

2. "The Life of Riley" phrase means "an easy and pleasant life".  I thought this title was very fitting for my blog as our dog is Riley, and we TRY to live an easy and pleasant life.  That is the goal at least, it doesn't always play out that way.

I thought I should clarify that since often times people will say, "Oh, I thought your baby's name was Riley."  I am debating changing the name of my blog, and I have been brainstorming some ideas.  But, I don't know.  I kind of like it.  What do you think?
